I’m a Scientist, and I’m Against Animal Testing

My name is Jessica Sandler. As a scientist, I’ve spent my professional career protecting people from dangerous chemicals, and I can confidently tell you that animal testing is cruel, archaic, and bad science.

Words can’t describe the tremendous pain, fear, and abuse that animals are condemned to endure day after day in cruel drug and chemical tests. Rabbits have corrosive chemicals rubbed onto their raw, abraded skin without being given any painkillers. And thousands of mice, rats, and other animals are treated like nothing more than living test tubes—they’re fed poisonous compounds and then discarded by experimenters who no longer deem their suffering to be useful.

As someone who cares about protecting people, animals, and the environment from toxic chemicals, I’m committed to research that’s driven by data—but with data from animal tests, the numbers just don’t add up. According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, 92 percent of all drugs that pass animal tests fail or cause terrible harm in humans.

By supporting new technologies and educating scientists around the world, PETA is at the forefront of a growing movement to save animals’ lives through humane research methods. We’re making real progress in stopping cruel tests—and right now, we need your help to do even more.

Together with the help of caring supporters like you, PETA’s team of scientists and researchers—far more than any other animal-protection organization has—is moving science into the 21st century and saving animals’ lives:

  • We’re promoting effective research methods that don’t harm animals. PETA and our international affiliates have provided more than $1.5 million to support the development of new skin irritancy tests for cosmetics products, computer models that assess whether certain chemicals or drugs might cause cancer, and other cutting-edge testing methods that are better at predicting reactions in humans and don’t cost animals’ lives.
  • We’re educating the public about the cruelty inherent in animal testing, which condemns more than 100 million animals every year to being burned, mutilated, and tormented in horrific experiments. Hundreds of companies have now pledged never to test on animals—and more commit to going cruelty-free almost every day.

Right now, you have the power to make a difference—to step up and help show the world that we can and must stop animal tests.

The Global “Stop Animal Tests” Challenge may be your best chance to help us put an end to deadly and archaic animal experiments and prevent millions of mice, rabbits, and other animals from ever suffering and dying in laboratories. Thank you for caring about animals and supporting our efforts to stop cruel tests.
