Common Sense is Urgently Needed in Korean Peninsula

Why not trade with North Korea? Why not provide massive amounts of aid to North Korea? Why not make North Korea an ally? Why do the interests of the United States need to conflict with North Korea’s? Why can’t President Trump do what he is supposedly great at and negotiate with them? They are a nation that is literally in the dark. Why not help bring them into the light?  Does this conflict really need to descend into catastrophe?

The stakes are too high not to find a peaceful solution to this situation. North Korea may be paranoid, delusional, insulated, despotic and aggressive, but they are  armed to the teeth, cash poor and desperate. In there mind, America is an existential threat. They also believe that the US will attack first.

But this strike does not need to happen. It is as simple as not attacking first. As long as the United States uses caution and common sense, thermonuclear war can be averted.

That being said, this is not about Donald J. Trump vs. Kim Jong-Un. This is not about the supremacy of the United States military vs. the bellicose yet inexperienced North Koreans. This is not about maintaining the geopolitical order in a historically combustible part of the world. To be honest, this is not even about the principles of freedom, equality, and the pursuit of happiness.

This is about common sense. This is about human survival. This is about not starting a war that will make enemies out of every living creature. This is more than avoiding unforeseen and unintentional consequences that are beyond comprehension; this is about preserving the very systems which permit Life to live in the first place. This is about the fundamental biological necessities that outweigh all other interests. There is no cause worth fighting for if no beings are left behind to reap the benefits.

It is true that America is not innocent and guiltless, Nor is North Korea naive. Both nations must do the right thing in spite of their flaws and worst instincts. This is the time to act with wakefulness, consistency, normality, wisdom, calmness, memory, responsibility, and honesty. I pray for our president.
